Sightings of Grain

Starring Claire Funderburk

The mother figure is closely observed. Within the domestic space this figure follows a protocol. There is an element given and an element lost. Give and Take, let’s say. So the figure plays that role, hiding from what resides behind that façade. There is a woman, taking care of a child. She loves it dearly; feeds it; protects it from the cold; holds it tight to her chest. When taking on this role, she follows it precariously. She holds and physicalizes herself with as much care as she gives to her young. At first, we situate ourselves from a distance, acknowledging her intimacy. Then, once she exits the domestic space, something else slowly takes a hold. Maybe her baser instinct. Yet, the two seem to contradict one another. And we find ourselves closer to an inner self that is released. Shot on 16mm. No sound.
